Who we are
The College Insider is a free weekly newsletter published by Apply Bright at apply-bright.com. References to "we," "us," or "our" in this policy mean Apply Bright.
What we collect, and why
If you subscribe to the newsletter
When you enter your email address into our subscribe form, we collect that email so we can send you The College Insider. The subscribe form is provided by beehiiv, our newsletter delivery platform. Beehiiv also records basic engagement information (whether you opened an issue, which links you clicked) so we can understand which stories are useful. That's it.
If you visit the site
Like most websites, our server and our hosting provider (Netlify) log standard request information, IP address, browser type, pages visited, referrer, so the site works and we can investigate problems. We use Google AdSense to display advertisements on the newsletter pages; AdSense uses cookies to show relevant ads and measure their performance.
If you contact us
If you submit the contact form on the Apply Bright Scholars Fund page or send us an email, we keep your message and reply directly. We don't add you to a marketing list from a contact form.
What we will never do with your data
- We will never sell your email address, name, or any other personal information.
- We will never rent, trade, or share your data with third parties for their own marketing.
- We will not use your information for anything beyond what's described in this policy.
Who else sees your data (and only because they have to)
We use a small number of trusted service providers to actually run the newsletter and the website. Each only sees what they need to do their job:
- beehiiv, newsletter delivery, subscriber management. Sees your email and engagement data.
- Netlify, website hosting and form processing. Sees standard request logs and any data you submit through a form.
- Google AdSense, advertisements on the newsletter pages. Uses cookies as described in Google's advertising policies.
Cookies
We use a small number of cookies and similar technologies:
- Essential, required for the site to work (e.g., remembering your cookie consent choice). Always on.
- Advertising, Google AdSense uses cookies to serve and measure ads. You can decline these via the cookie banner.
You can also control cookies through your browser settings, or opt out of personalized advertising at aboutads.info/choices (US) or youronlinechoices.eu (EU).
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the following rights regarding your personal information:
- Access, request a copy of what we hold about you.
- Correction, ask us to fix anything that's wrong.
- Deletion, ask us to delete your information. You can also unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time using the link at the bottom of every issue.
- Objection / withdrawal of consent, tell us to stop a particular use of your data.
To exercise any of these rights, email sierraperosa@gmail.com and we'll handle it within a reasonable timeframe (typically 30 days).
GDPR & international users
If you're in the European Economic Area, the UK, or another region with comprehensive privacy laws, the rights above apply to you. Our legal basis for processing your data is: (a) consent, when you subscribe to the newsletter or accept cookies; and (b) legitimate interest, for the basic operation of the website and replying to your messages. You can withdraw consent at any time.
CCPA & California residents
If you live in California, you have the right to know what personal information we collect, to request deletion, and to opt out of "sale" of personal information. We do not sell personal information as defined under the CCPA. You can exercise your other rights by emailing sierraperosa@gmail.com.
Data retention
We keep your information only as long as we need it: subscriber emails are kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them; contact-form messages are kept long enough to respond and resolve the conversation; server logs are kept by our hosting provider on a short rolling window for security and debugging.
Children
The College Insider is intended for high-school students, college students, and the adults who support them. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe we have, please email us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the effective date at the top of the page and, for material changes, notify subscribers in the newsletter. The current version always lives here.
